
Biomes
The Overworld is divided into 60+ unique biomes β each with its own terrain, climate, vegetation and mobs. Here are all the major biomes organized by climate.
Climate system
Biomes are grouped by climate, which affects rain vs. snow, water freezing, vegetation density, and mob spawns. Adjacent biomes with similar climates blend together smoothly since 1.18.
Temperate
Moderate temperatures with regular rain. The most common starting biomes.
Cold
Colder temperatures. Snow appears at high altitudes.
Hot & Dry
No rain. Water is scarce but unique structures spawn.
Tropical
Hot and humid with dense vegetation.
Frozen
Permanent snow and ice. Water freezes naturally.
Mountain
High altitude biomes above Y=100.
Temperate biomes
Moderate temperatures with regular rain. The most common starting biomes.
Plains
TemperateFlat grassy fields with sparse oak trees. The most common starting biome β perfect for villages and horses.
Forest
TemperateDense woodland with oak and birch trees. A reliable source of wood, mushrooms, and apples.
Dark Forest
TemperateExtremely dense forest with massive dark oak trees. So dark that hostile mobs can spawn during day.
Swamp
TemperateMurky shallow water dotted with lily pads. Home to slimes, witches and the rare witch hut.
Mangrove Swamp
TemperateTropical swamp biome with towering mangrove trees and muddy terrain.
Cold biomes
Colder temperatures. Snow appears at high altitudes.
Taiga
ColdConiferous forest of spruce trees, sometimes snow-covered. Wolves and foxes roam here.
Old Growth Taiga
ColdAncient taiga with massive spruce trees and thick moss-covered rocks.
Windswept Hills
ColdDramatic cliffs and steep mountains with exposed stone and gravel.
Cherry Grove
ColdBeautiful pink forests of cherry blossom trees. Added in 1.20.
Hot & Dry biomes
No rain. Water is scarce but unique structures spawn.
Desert
Hot / DryEndless sand under a cloudless sky. No rain, no surface water β but desert temples and villages are common.
Badlands
Hot / DryColorful terracotta canyons with exposed gold ore. Also called Mesa.
Savanna
Hot / DryYellow rolling hills with acacia trees. Where the iconic horse-friendly villages spawn.
Windswept Savanna
Hot / DryExtreme terrain with floating cliffs and dramatic overhangs. Very rare.
Tropical biomes
Hot and humid with dense vegetation.
Jungle
Hot / HumidTowering jungle trees with vines. Home to ocelots, pandas, parrots and rare jungle temples.
Bamboo Jungle
Hot / HumidDense bamboo forest variant of the jungle. Pandas spawn more frequently here.
Sparse Jungle
Hot / HumidJungle edge biome with shorter trees and less dense vegetation.
Frozen biomes
Permanent snow and ice. Water freezes naturally.
Snowy Plains
FrozenA blanket of snow as far as the eye can see. Strays replace skeletons here, and igloos generate.
Snowy Taiga
FrozenSnow-covered spruce forest. Wolves and foxes have white fur here.
Ice Spikes
FrozenFlat ice plains dotted with massive packed ice spikes reaching to the sky.
Frozen Ocean
FrozenOcean surface frozen into ice. Polar bears and strays spawn on the ice.
Mountain biomes
High altitude biomes above Y=100.
Meadow
MountainPeaceful flower-covered meadows high in the mountains. Villages can spawn here.
Stony Peaks
MountainBare stone peaks with exposed ores. The highest non-snow mountains.
Jagged Peaks
