Climate system

Biomes are grouped by climate, which affects rain vs. snow, water freezing, vegetation density, and mob spawns. Adjacent biomes with similar climates blend together smoothly since 1.18.

Temperate

Moderate temperatures with regular rain. The most common starting biomes.

Cold

Colder temperatures. Snow appears at high altitudes.

Hot & Dry

No rain. Water is scarce but unique structures spawn.

Tropical

Hot and humid with dense vegetation.

Frozen

Permanent snow and ice. Water freezes naturally.

Mountain

High altitude biomes above Y=100.

Temperate biomes

Moderate temperatures with regular rain. The most common starting biomes.

Plains

Temperate

Flat grassy fields with sparse oak trees. The most common starting biome β€” perfect for villages and horses.

Biome blending

Since Minecraft 1.18, the game uses 3D noise terrain and biome blending to smoothly transition between biomes β€” giving rolling hills and natural-looking borders rather than sharp cuts.

Locating biomes

In Java Edition, use the command /locate biome minecraft:cherry_grove to find the nearest of any biome type.
